Combatting a Healthcare Crisis

With parts of rural Kansas facing a severe nursing shortage, the need for trained health coaches is growing. However, the cost of training programs remains a barrier for many potential students.

The Kansas Clinical Improvement Collaborative (KCIC) Health Coach Training Program is combating the problem by offering scholarships that cover tuition, books, housing, and more for students interested in pursuing a career in health coaching. The effort is part of a partnership with Northwest Kansas Technical College (Northwest Tech).

Students who enroll in Northwest Tech’s one-year training program and express an interest in health coaching will be eligible to receive scholarships.

Program Overview

The Health Coach Training Program is an advanced learning opportunity designed for any student with a passion for improving the quality of care for rural residents with chronic conditions. The enhanced curriculum includes training in chronic care management, healthcare policy, and communication skills to help participants effectively serve as health coaches. Additionally, students will participate in a one-week, in-person learning opportunity with current health coaches to gain practical experience and understand the day-to- day responsibilities of the role.

Investing in Our Future

During the program, students will receive scholarships covering tuition, fees, books, housing, and a stipend to help cover expenses while attending the necessary training sessions. Upon successful completion of the program, participants will receive a certificate in care management and health coaching and become certified by the National Health Career Association and the National Certified Health Education Specialist Board. Students will also receive job placement assistance and the opportunity to work in full-time positions with local hospitals or health centers.

Care Management Services

As health coaches, participants can make a significant impact on healthcare access and outcomes in rural communities. Care management services provided by health coaches include:
  • Patient education and counseling
  • Health coaching and lifestyle interventions

  • Care coordination and case management
By providing these services, health coaches can help rural residents with chronic conditions manage their conditions more effectively and improve their quality of life. Health coaches can also collaborate with other healthcare professionals and community organizations to ensure patients receive holistic care and support.
